Spatial software systems and datasets offer the greatest strategic, business, and financial benefits when they are continually and effectively maintained. The lack of such support results in outdated and rigid GIS implementations that provide limited benefits to the enterprise.
IT department budgets often focus on improving one enterprise system each year. While this approach may work for systems such as ERP, CRM, etc., it can result in missed opportunities and increased upgrade costs for GIS infrastructure. Rapid advancements in GIS software, hardware, and best practices, not to mention continuous data updates, require greater attention than traditional IT systems to fully realize the potential of geospatial assets.
