Avineon Awarded Small Business Innovation Research Contract With Department of Defense
Phase I contract covers transforming Navy’s Afloat Master Planning System into a service-oriented architecture
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Jan. 23, 2007 – Avineon, Inc., a leading provider of IT, engineering, geospatial and program management services, today announced that it has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program Phase I contract by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Naval Sea Systems Command. The largest of the Navy’s five systems commands, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) engineers, builds and supports America’s fleet of ships and combat systems. Avineon has been selected to transform NAVSEA’s existing Afloat Master Planning System (AMPS) into a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA).
The purpose of DoD’s SBIR program is to harness the innovative talents of the nation’s small technology companies for U.S. military and economic strength. This program funds early-stage research and development projects at small technology companies – projects which serve a DoD need and have the potential for commercialization in the private sector and military markets. Avineon has a history of successful accomplishment of SBIRs and has recently delivered the Electro-Magnetic Interference Knowledge Management System (EMI KMS) as a Phase III product of an earlier SBIR effort.

In keeping with Avineon’s rigorous engineering approach and disciplined development methodology, AMPS is first being decomposed and documented using the DoD Architectural Framework (DoDAF). Individual Web services will be developed from this model to support the Navy’s continuing effort to engineer platform and cross-platform interoperability onto deploying ships and supporting infrastructure. Successful completion of this Phase I effort will lay the groundwork for a complete rearchitecture of the existing AMPS infrastructure that will improve authoritative data availability and reliability and will enable AMPS to better meet the information transfer needs within the highly-dynamic Navy modernization environment.
