South Florida Water Management District Awards Land Cover / Land Use GIS Mapping Project to Avineon

Clearwater, FL (September 22, 2003): Avineon, Inc., a leading provider of environmental mapping services, today announced that it has been awarded a two year contract for mapping Land Cover and Land Use (LCLU) for the boundaries covered by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD).

The mapping process will employ a combination of digital imagery, aerial photography, ancillary data, and fieldwork to produce a highly detailed dataset. Land cover mapping will require the photointerpretation of vegetation types and associated natural habitats while land use mapping will require the identification of man-made or cultural features within the District's boundaries. In conjunction with producing the LCLU data layer, Avineon will deliver parcel coverages containing property appraiser land use zoning codes for each county within the District. All data will be delivered as a geographic information system (GIS) digital dataset.

SFWMD's jurisdiction includes approximately 18,000 square miles and 16 counties -- extending from the southern Orlando area south to Key West and from Fort Myers on the west coast to Fort Pierce on the east coast. Prominent natural features located within the district include the Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and many state parks. Vegetation in such areas will be mapped using color infrared imagery coupled with field visits. Most of the coastal fringe area consists of high density residential, commercial, and industrial uses while the interior is comprised of various environmental conservation areas and agricultural uses, which will be mapped using a combination of photointerpretation and ancillary data.

Avineon's staff includes biologists, geologists, ecologists, and geographers who have completed GIS mapping projects in every state of the U.S., as well as many international locations.
